The sceptic
A lot of crochet kits are marketed as being for absolute beginners, but are anything but. This kit is very different. The project really is perfect for an absolute beginner. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and there are instructions for both right handed and left handed crocheters. These mug rugs were much simpler, and much faster, to make than the amigurumi animal that was my first project.
The first timer
I have never crocheted before but have always wanted to try. I decided to order these because they looked easy enough, and they are super cute. I cannot believe that I completed it. The written instructions and video were extremely easy to follow for a beginner. So, they did not look perfect, but they do look like Hoppy Capys and I love them.
The one who made two
There was no way I could make just one. I immediately had to make his friend because they were a pair. So impressed by this kit and the attention to detail. I cannot wait to gift one to my mom so she and I each have a little soulmate capy with us.

How the videos work
Lauren guides every stitch
Every kit comes with step by step videos from Lauren at WillowCrochet, filmed twice, once for right handed makers and once for left. Scan the card in your box, tick off each step as you go, and your place is saved for next time. It is like having a friend beside you at the kitchen table who never gets tired of the same question.

Open it and start
Soft yarn in the right colours, an ergonomic hook, stuffing (for amigurumi), stitch markers, a yarn needle and a printed pattern. The amigurumi capybara kits add two gold keychain clips so the finished friends can live on a bag or a set of keys. There is nothing to buy separately and nothing to work out on your own.
Questions people ask
I have never crocheted. Where do I start?
With the Mug Rug Crochet Kit. It is made for absolute beginners: two flat coasters, the basic stitches, and Lauren's videos walking you through each one. Most people finish both mug rugs in three to four hours and stop being a beginner somewhere in the second one.
Are the videos for left handed people too?
Yes. Every kit has two full sets of videos, one filmed right handed and one filmed left handed, so you follow someone whose hands move the way yours do. Choose your set once and the rest of the course follows.
How long does each kit take?
The Mug Rug is three to four hours. The Stitch Sculptor is six to eight hours across its three projects. The capybaras, Wiggles and Pompom or Peachy and Plum, are three to four hours each. Benny the Bunny is six to eight hours. Every kit shows its time and skill level on the card.
Do I need to buy anything else?
No. Yarn, hook, stuffing, stitch markers, yarn needle and pattern are all in the box, in the amounts the project needs. Bring a pair of scissors and a cup of tea.
What is a magic circle?
The magic circle is the tight starting loop that every amigurumi begins from, and it is the step that trips up more beginners than any other. In the capybara kits you learn really easy steps on how to perfect your magic circle, which will be a base for all your future amigurumi projects.
Which kit comes after the Mug Rug?
The Stitch Sculptor. It takes the stitches you know and adds three more skills over three projects, finishing with working in the round, which is what every stuffed animal is built on. After that, the capybaras and then Benny.
Will I lose my place in the videos?
No. The course lets you tick off each step, and it remembers where you were when you come back, whether that is later the same evening or three weekends later. The card in your box takes you straight to your kit.
Is a kit a good gift for someone who has never crocheted?
